Mantra represents the image and powers of a god. "Mantradheenashcha Devta" which means Gods can be controlled using mantras.Hence success or Siddhi happens when mantra creates the image of that god in our heart.Hence for getting mantra siddhi,hridaya paksh or heart should be activated first.
In ancient times ,we were not this intensely buddhi-grasth or dominated by thoughts and brain.But,when we started giving much more prominence to buddhi paksh than bhaav paksh or hridaya paksh sadhanas started failing .
Then we made idols and placed them in our temples.But murthy is just the imagination of the artist who never saw that God.
Actual devata one can see only when mantra gets instilled in his or her heart,then the devata form appears in front of your eyes.Because mantra represents that particular god.Activation of hridaya paksh leads one to MantraSiddhi.
